Summer in the City

June 21st, 2010

You may think it’s impossible to plan an affordable vacation to a desirable destination this summer. The trick is not to avoid vacationing all together, but rather to do it wisely. Many hotspots, specifically New York City, offer tons of fun AND free events and activities during the summer months. Now all you have to do is find a cheap flight to New York, and you’re ready to go!

A great financially-sound way to occupy your time is Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series. Throughout the end of August, free concerts are held in Central Park every Friday morning from 7-9am EST. Listen to Mary J. Blige on July 2nd, or the Black Eyed Peas on the 30th. If the Jonas Brothers are more your style, you’ll want to show up extra early on August 13th.

Another option is the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival. This summer’s lineup includes Monty Python and the Holy Grail on July 26th, and Bonnie and Clyde on August 23rd.

Rather be a part of the action? Every Sunday during the summer, visitors can participate in MoonDance at Pier 54. Free dance lessons in swing, tango, and salsa begin at 6:30pm. Show off what you’ve learned when the live band starts at 7.

The city is bursting with even more free or cheap summer adventures, and finding a cheap flight to New York during these hotter months is easier than ever. With all the money you’ll save, you can even splurge on a hotel! In one of the world’s most expensive cities, careful planning can result in a very reasonably priced leave of absence from your daily grind. For vacationers on a budget, it’s the perfect place to be.
